Japanese glass fishing floats, once used by fishermen to keep their nets and lines afloat, often drifted across the Pacific and washed ashore in Hawaii. Made of hand-blown glass, usually green or blue, they became treasured beachcombing finds throughout the 20th century. While no longer commonly used, these floats are now prized as maritime antiques and decorative pieces. In Hawaii, they hold a special place in local history and coastal culture, symbolizing the islands’ deep ties across the Pacific. We will complete a simple craft using clear ornaments and twine to create miniature versions of these treasures.
