About the event
Original built in 1921 by the Fujiwara family - immigrants from Shikoku, Japan - this historic tea house was the first building on this hill in Alewa Heights. The government took over the tea house during WWII and used it as an emergency fire and first aid station. It was again operated as a tea house after the war, and has operated with the Natsunoya name since 1958. Prominent visitors over the decades have included John Wayne and Kirk Douglas.
Located a few short miles outside Fort Shafter’s back gate and open only for events, this is a rare opportunity to visit this historic building! We have reserved the Nigo room, with its sweeping views of the Oahu coastline. Our menu will include the following:
- Rice
- Oriental Salad
- Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura
- Teriyaki Steak
- Karaage Chicken
- Spicy Nasubi
- Agedashi Tofu w/ Shiitake
- Noodles
- Salmon Tofu Salad
- and hot tea and ice water.
