About the event
Did you know that as many as 48% of Hawaii families struggle with food insecurity, with 1 in 3 keiki not having enough food to eat? The global pandemic of COVID-19 exacerbated the hunger crisis, with food insecurity in Hawaii growing by more than 50% since the onset of the pandemic. And the largest food distribution pantry in all of Hawaii is right in our backyard.
Located a short walk from Fort Shafter's back gate, just over the fence behind the bank and AAFES Pxtra, The Pantry is a food distribution service for people in need that is operated by Feeding Hawaii Together, a Hawaii-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Founded more than 20 years ago by Diana and Charlie Lorenz, The Pantry serves those in need in a “grocery store style” setting, providing clients with the opportunity to choose the food they want.
The Hui will work the morning shift, helping to load boxes of food into vehicles as well as loading items into the boxes inside the warehouse. Wear comfortable clothes; closed-toe shoes are a must, and bring a bottle of water. Volunteers must register for the event *and* as Pantry volunteers on their website (thepantry.org) by January 1 in order to be added to the schedule.
Numbers are limited; each shift can only accommodate six volunteers. If you sign up and must cancel, please let us know as soon as possible, as we have committed to staffing all six slots or letting them know we won't fill all slots by Jan 1. Participants can meet inside the back gate at 0830 and walk over to the location together. Start off your year volunteering for a great cause!
